Cake Ingredients

200 g butter
200 g dark chocolate
6 eggs
2 1/2 cups sugar
3 cups self raising flour
4 tbsp cocoa powder
1 1/3 cups orange juice

Preheat the oven to 180c / 360F / gas mark 4.
Line the sides and bottom of a square cake tin (230x230x30mm (9x9x1 ¼ inches) with baking parchment.

Melt butter and chocolate in a saucepan and set aside to cool for a few minutes.

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until pale and creamy, and then slowly add the melted chocolate and butter to the mixture, followed by the orange juice.
Add the flour and cocoa powder and mix well with a wooden spoon or spatula until the ingredients have combined.

Carefully pour the cake mixture into the lined cake tin.
Transfer the cake tin to the oven and bake for 1 1/4 hours, or until the top of the cake is firm but has a shiny and sticky look to it.
If you insert a sharp knife into the middle of the cake, the knife should come out clean.

Place the cake tin on a cooling rack. Once the cake has cooled completely , remove it from the tin.

  Icing Ingredients

1 kg ready-to-roll fondant icing.
Chocolate spread, jam or maple syrup - so the icing will stick to the cake.
Corn flour or sugar powder to help with the kneading.
Food Colourings - Orange, green, red and black
A paint brush
A small cup of water
2 wooden toothpicks
2 different size cups - for decorating the wings.

Step 1

Print out the butterfly template.
Cut the butterfly shape out by using the lines as a guide, and place it on  the pre-cooled cake. You will need to cut out the wing pattern twice. The second time, flip the wing template over so you have a mirror image for the second set wings.

Tip: It is recommended to copy the template onto baking paper which will not absorb oil.


Step 2

Cover the entire cake (both of the wings, the body and the head) with the chocolate spread. The chocolate will help the icing stick to the cake.

Tip: You can replace the chocolate spread with jam or maple syrup.

Step 3

Take 400 grams of the fondant icing for the body and the head.
Knead the icing a little bit before you colour it.

Tip: You can put a little bit of margarine on your hands, to prevent the icing from sticking to them. You can also use corn flour or powdered sugar on the kneading surface for this purpose.

Tip: The fondant icing dries quickly in open air so it is recommended you keep what you are not using in an air tight container.

Step 4

In order to add colour to the icing, pour a few drops of food colouring onto the icing and knead well to spread the colour evenly. To darken the colour, add a few more drops of colouring.
Colours to use: orange for the body and head, 2 shades of green for the wings and red to decorate the wings.

Tip: You do not need more than a few drops of colour. It is best to start with a few drops and add more if necessary.

Step 5

After you have finished colouring the icing, take the icing that you would like to use and flatten it with a rolling pin to the required size. Wrap the icing around the rolling pin, and then cover the cake. Shape the icing with your hands to fit snugly and remove excess icing with a knife.


Step 6

Repeat this process with the remaining parts of the cake.
When you have finished, put the pieces together so that it looks like the BabyTV butterfly.

Tip: Move the pieces slowly while building your cake.


Step 7

In order to add the decorative dough for the wings, cut out the red icing using a cup or glass.
To make sure the wing designs stick to the wing, use a small paint brush (or your finger) to cover the area where you will place the design with a little bit of water.

Tip: You need two cup sizes for the wings. You can use any small circular cup, glass or small bowl that you have. Place it on the  icing and push to cut.


Step 8

After you've finished the body of the butterfly you can move onto the face. Use the coloured fondant icing to shape the nose, mouth, eyes and eyebrows. You can also paint the face, or parts of the face with food colouring and a brush.



Step 9

To make the antennae, take a tooth pick and wrap a small amount of orange fondant icing around it. Repeat twice to make the 2 antennas and then stick it  on top of the head.
You can decorate the top of the antennae with red icing, or you can paint it with a brush and  food colouring.

Tip: Make sure not to serve the antennas to children. They are for decoration only and should not be eaten.


Step 10

Finish the cake by taking the remaining green icing and wrapping it around the bottom of the cake for a nice clean finish.
